Top 10 Complaints Overheard at the 2009 WSOP
by Bodog Poker | Jul 15 2009

1. Harrah’s refusing entry to over 800 players to the Main Event on Day 1-d. It seems that 800 or more players required more than six months to register for the Main Event, and waited until the last possible moment to try and get into it. The Rio reached capacity on Day 1-d and closed registration.

2. Long sessions with slow action. With fields so big in many events, a lot of players were complaining about the lack of action and slow pace of play. Most of these complaints were from young internet players who are used to playing at a much faster pace.

3. Michael Jackson overload. Since the death of the King of Pop every bar in Vegas is playing his music and every television is broadcasting stories on him. Many have heard and seen enough of Michael already. Give everyone a break from it for awhile.

4. Dealer mistakes have prompted numerous players to complain over hands that required a ruling from Rio officials. Many of these dealer blunders occurred in the Main Event, and often the rulings were as unpopular as the mistakes made.

5. Some complaints were made by players over the lack of announcements provided by tournament organizers on how many players were remaining in the event. This info is crucial around the bubble and in the late stages of the tournament, and players should be told frequently how many are remaining.

6. The heat is always something that people complain about during the WSOP. With temperatures well over 100 degrees, many players from Europe and northern climates are finding the heat a little too much to handle this week. Even nighttime temperatures are too hot for many foreign players.

7. The lack of poker stars around the playing area has caused a few complaints from fans that are used to mingling with poker’s elite names. In the past they were everywhere, but now there’s a room for professionals to lounge and hide from the crowds of adoring poker fans.

8. Freezing playing areas have been a complaint from players for years. The Amazon room is notorious for having cold temperatures, especially when players are coming in from 100-plus degrees outside. Players have to bring an extra jacket or shirt so they aren’t cold during play.

9. Shorten the delay for the final nine players to play for the championship. People don’t want to wait four months to find out who the new champion is. This move didn’t do wonders for ESPN’s coverage last year like it was supposed to, why not make the delay to the final table only a couple of weeks long?

10. The lack of television coverage this year has resulted in complaints from die-hard poker fans who want to watch the amateurs win bracelets as much as the pros. This year coverage is limited to the big events, so more “well known” players will get most of the television time.
